Biniam Simon, an exiled journalist, editor, and founding director of Radio Erena, has been awarded the PEN Eritrea Freedom of Expression Award 2025.
The PEN Eritrea Freedom of Expression Award is announced every year on September 18th to commemorate the press freedom ban in Eritrea and honour writers and journalists who have been unlawfully imprisoned since 2001. The winner of the Award receives the PEN Eritrea trophy, along with a monetary prize of $1,000 in recognition of their courage, creativity, and commitment.
Simon has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to advancing freedom of expression and independent journalism. His leadership at Radio Erena has created one of the most vital alternative media platforms for Eritreans, both at home and in the diaspora, providing credible information and amplifying voices long silenced by state control.
Before he was forced into exile, he was working for years at Eritrea’s Ministry of Information as a news presenter, videographer, and editor. In exile, Simon co-founded Radio Erena in Paris in 2009, at a time when Eritrea had entered what many describe as a “dark age of information.” Radio Erena emerged as a beacon of truth. Broadcasting in Tigrinya and Arabic via satellite, website, and YouTube, it has for 16 years broken through the information blockade, reaching audiences denied access to uncensored news.
Despite cyberattacks and jamming by the Eritrean government, the station continues to deliver independent news, cultural programs, and stories that give voice to Eritreans inside and outside the country. Under Simon’s leadership, Radio Erena has shed light on the plight of refugees, bridged the gap between the diaspora and those at home, and cultivated a trusted platform where information is balanced, credible, and professional.
Biniam’s achievements extend beyond broadcasting. He has built an enduring institution by involving and mentoring many young journalists who have remained with Radio Erena for years, a rare accomplishment in the Eritrean media context. He has also ensured that the outlet maintains journalistic balance—avoiding blind partisanship while staying true to the principles of truth, justice, and accountability.
In awarding Biniam Simon the 2025 Freedom of Expression Award, the selection committee recognises not only his professional excellence but also his personal sacrifices and nearly decades-long dedication to ensuring Eritreans can access independent voices. His work reminds us that even in the most challenging circumstances, the struggle for truth and freedom of expression can endure.
This year’s Award Committee include Timnet Tesfu, Yemane Haile and Henok Tesfabruk.
Chair of the award committee Timnet Tesfu comments: “The committee was impressed by Biniam Siomn’s extraordinary work as founder and director of the independent news station. Radio Erena. Despite political intimidation, limited resources, and information scarcity, he has tirelessly and courageously reported on the issues facing Eritreans with exceptional skill, tenacity, and integrity.”
The award ceremony will take place in October 2025 during PEN Eritrea’s Annual meeting in Milan, Italy.
