PEN Eritrea in Exile mourns the passing of Hege Newth, former Secretary General of PEN Norway and an Honorary Member of PEN Eritrea in Exile, whose life’s work embodied compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to defend human dignity.
Her death is a profound loss not only for her family, PEN Norway, but also for the global freedom-loving community, including the biggest beneficiary of Hege’s advocacy, PEN Eritrea in Exile.
For PEN Eritrea, Hege was not only an ally but also a pillar of support at the decisive moments for exiled Eritrean writers and journalists and the establishment of the exiled centre. Over the last decade, from the inception of founding PEN Eritrea to the last moments of her life, Hege stood behind us and left a legacy that will be remembered in the history of our centre. Our gratitude to her is enduring and immeasurable.
We extend our condolences to her family, our colleagues at PEN Norway and many others who are affected by the untimely departure of a great colleague.
